Welcome to Lodi, California.
Lodi is a city located in San Joaquin County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 56,999. Named for a city in Italy, Lodi is best known as a center of wine production, although its vintages are far less prestigious than those of Sonoma and Napa counties. It is also an increasingly popular exurb for commuters priced out of homeownership in the San Francisco Bay Area. Lodi's agrarian history centers around its location, which is on the edge of the fertile Sacramento Delta. The Miwok Indians were the original inhabitants of this part of California, and they enjoyed and appreciated the beauty and fertility of the land as much as the first settlers did. When the California Gold Rush passed through the area, a few people realized the agricultural potential of the Sacramento Delta as they passed through. These few settlers cleverly realized that the true riches of the area lied in this delta. Since the Gold Rush, hundreds of different fruits and vegetables have been grown in the area in and around Lodi. Watermelon once dominated much of Lodi's agricultural output, but then the Tokay Grape took over. Today, other varieties of grapes have become more popular, and Lodi calls itself the "Wine Grape Capital". This region has become a huge grape growing and wine producing region. In addition to numerous varieties of wines being produced here, fields of pumpkins, almonds, beans, kiwis, melons, asparagus, sunflower, and squash are visible everywhere. Orchards of apples, cherries, peaches, almonds, and pears are numerous as well. Lodi is an agricultural stronghold, as it produces most of the base of the economy in the Lodi Area.
With agriculture at its center, modern day Lodi has a warm, pleasant atmosphere to provide for its residents. The fine and delicate nature of agriculture is reflected in the people of Lodi, as they claim to be openly hospitable and friendly. Therefore, Lodi is an ideal place to raise a family. Such a relaxed lifestyle combined with a true appreciation of nature provides a comfortable and beautiful aroma of this area. Lodi is close to the lengthy and pristine waterways of the Sacramento River Delta, as well as the Sierra Nevada foothills. With a temperate and dry climate, residents find ample outdoor recreational opportunity, from hiking to skydiving to fishing to soccer. Lodi is also within a day's drive of places such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Sacramento, Reno, San Francisco, and Monterey. Agricultural products include nursery stock, sugar beets, fruit, nuts, grain, and dairy and beef cattle. Wine and processed foods are made, and there is diverse manufacturing. Lodi was founded in 1869 and settled by wheat farmers from the Dakotas, mostly of German descent.
